NICOL DAVID EYES BRITISH OPEN 2012

PETALING JAYA: World No. 1 Nicol David is set to have a fairly easy run in her pursuit of a fourth British Open title in London from May 12-20.

The British Open is the oldest squash tournament in the world dating back to the early 1920s and carries as much prestige as the World Open.

However, the tournament was cancelled after the 2009 edition due to financial constraints and has only found its way back into the calendar this year.

With squash not part of the London Olympics, the British meet has attracted almost all the top players in the world, including Nicol.

The three-time champion – in 2005, 2006 and 2008 – is certainly hungry to add to her collection after falling short three years ago to Madeline Perry in the quarter-finals.

Nicol is certainly in top form having won all three tournaments she has competed in thus far – the World Series Finals, Cleveland Classic and the KL Open last month.

She will take on a qualifier in the first round and should advance to face 11th seed Samantha Teran of Mexico in the second round.

The Penangite, who has a 7-0 winning record against Teran, who is her sparring partner, should proceed to the last eight where she is likely to meet old rival Rachael Grinham of Australia.

It is in the semi-finals where Nicol will probably face her biggest test as she could be up against third seed Laura Massaro, who will be backed by a strong home crowd.

Coincidentally, Massaro is somewhat of a bogey player for Nicol as she was the only one to beat the six-time world champion twice last year.

National No. 2 Low Wee Wern is in the bottom half of the draw and will face the dangerous Alison Waters in the first round.

If the 13th seeded Wee Wern pulls off a win over Waters, who is making a comeback following a year-long layoff due to injury, she should face KL Open finalist Annie Au of Hong Kong in the second round.

The other Malaysian women in the fray are national No. 3 Delia Arnold, who faces world No. 2 Jenny Duncalf in the first round, and Siti Munirah Jusoh, who will start from the qualifiers.

The other strong contenders for the title are veteran Madeline Perry of Ireland and Egyptian duo Raneem El Weleily and Nour El Sherbini.

In the men’s event, the evergreen Ong Beng Hee is the sole Malaysian in the main draw following national No.1 Mohd Azlan Iskandar’s injury setback.

Beng Hee will face young Tom Richards in the first round and a win should pit him against former world No.1 Nick Matthew of England in the second round.

PANDELELA RINONG SPORTWOMAN 2012

KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttler Lee Chong Wei, as expected, bagged his third National Sportsman Award, thanks largely to his achievement of winning seven international titles apart from reaching the World Championships final in 2011.

Pandelela Rinong sprang a big surprise by capturing the National Sportswoman Award, making her the first diver to earn the country’s highest accolade for athletes.

Pandelela beat the likes of squash queen Nicol David, shooter Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi, bowler Jacqueline Sijore and track cyclist Fatehah Mustapa to claim the RM20,000 prize money.

World No. 1 Nicol enjoyed a fantastic season with seven international titles on the WISPA circuit, including a record equalling sixth World Open title in Holland last year.

Track cyclist Azizulhasni Awang and Nicol were the respective winners for 2010 but the selection panel opted for Pandelela due to her breakthrough achievements in 2011.

Pandelela became the first Malaysian to win a medal at the FINA Diving World Series when she claimed the silver in the 10m platform individual at the opening leg in Moscow.

She also partnered Leong Mun Yee to a silver in the 10m platform synchro in the Beijing leg of the series, which is by invitation only to the top eight ranked divers in the world.

Pandelela also did the country proud with two medals at the World University Games in Shenzhen – in the 10m platform individual and with Mun Yee in the synchro discipline.

The silver is the best result by a Malaysian athlete in Universiade history.

The 19-year-old Sarawakian also pulled off another first with Mun Yee in bagging gold in the platform synchro at the German Open, making them the first diving pair to win at the World Grand Prix circuit.

Pandelela also retained her 10m platform individual, the only event she was entered for, title with ease at the Indonesia SEA Games.

Pandelela herself, expressed shock but delight at winning the National Sportstwoman Award for the first time.

“Are you sure? I was also nominated for the award last year after winning the New Delhi Commonwealth Games gold medal and the Youth Olympic Games two silver medals in Singapore.

“But it was Nicol who won. I expected her to do it again as her achievements were great last year.

“I’m very surprised, but I was kind of hoping I could be the winner as I was asked to come back after the Moscow competition to attend the Awards ceremony.

“I’m happy to get a big recognition for diving,” said the Olympic-bound Pandelela, who took bronze in the FINA Diving World Series in Moscow last weekend.

Pandelela will fly to Tijuana, Mexico, today to join Mun Yee for the final round of the series.

Chong Wei said winning a third award after 2005 and 2008 will spur him to deliver glory for the country at the London Olympics in August.

“I came close in Beijing four years ago and I’m more mature now.

“This award is a boost to my dream of bringing home Malaysia’s first Olympic gold medal,” said Chong Wei.

The 10-member synchronised swimming team led by Katrina Ann Hadi got the nod for the national women’s team award based on their clean sweep of all five gold medals at stake in the Indonesia SEA Games.

The men’s recurve trio of Chu Sian, Khairul and Haziq was the choice for the men’s team award due to their feat of earning the country the maximum Olympic quota for archery after qualifying for the team event at the World Championships in Italy last year.

JAKARTA: Izzaq Faris Ramlan's late strike saw Malaysia walk out 2-1 winners against SEA Games favourite Thailand at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium here Wednesday night.

The win will not only help restore the confidence of the players who had lost two valuable points in their opening match against Singapore after a goalless draw on Monday, it will also provide the right tonic to face the home team on Nov 17 after meeting Cambodia on Nov 13.

Malaysia, hoping to defend the gold won in Laos two years ago, however, had to wait until the 25th minute for the Midas touch of skipper Baddrol Bakhtiar.

Baddrol, who received a beautiful pass from left back Asraruddin Putra Omar, beat Thailand goalkeeper Ukrit Wongmeema for the opening goal but credit must go to goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat for stopping numerous goal-worthy attempts from the Thais, especially skipper Ronnachai Rangsiyo.

Stunned by the goal, Thailand increased their presence in the Malaysian half and managed to find the equaliser through substitute Natarid Thammroddodpon's strike in the 76th minute.

Sensing a need for more bite upfront, coach Ong Kim Swee decided to throw his ace in the pack, Izzaq Faris, to replace Wan Zaharulnizam in the 80 minute and the move immediately paid dividends.

Four minutes later (84th minute) Izzaq Faris struck an unstoppable shot that not only beat the Thailand goalkeeper but ensured all three points for the Malaysian squad.

Indian Formula One Grand Prix

New Delhi: Everyone was a winner at the end of the day as the first ever Indian Grand Prix which promised much, eventually managed to live up to its expectations in grand style.

The man of the moment once again turned out to be Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel, but one would have to say that given the way the current season has progressed, the outcome was almost a foregone conclusion.

Other than that, Adrian Sutil, thanks to a ninth place finish turned out to be the 'Force' behind India's presence among the points.

In the process, Sutil did no harm to his chances of extending his stay with Vijay Mallya and co. which did not seem to be a foregone conclusion earlier in the week.

But, crucially the success of the race will undoubtedly expedite the start of a new chapter, when it comes to India's reputation of organizing high end sporting events, which took quite a battering after the debacle of the 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG).

The cynics will of course come up with the Mad Dogs and Englishmen theory, citing the example of the mongrel which found its way on to the tracks during Friday's practice session.

However, one has to be mindful of the fact that not only has India hosted a number of major international fixtures in the last couple of years, athletes representing the country have also come up with the desired results, which was vindicated by the second place finish at the Commonwealth Games and sixth position in the medals tally during the Asian Games.

The 2010 Hockey World Cup, the Asian Badminton Championships the same year, the 11th ICC Cricket World Cup, rounded off by the grand finale of the F1 race has stamped India's arrival as a global force in international sports with a vengeance.
