Police, MACC asked to come down hard on bookies

KEMAMAN (Sept 10, 2011): The Youth and Sports Ministry wants the Police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to come down hard football bookies.
Its minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said their match-fixing activities had tarnished the image of Malaysian football and that the "cancer should be tackled without mercy".
"This (match-fixing) is very shameful and disappointing. I am giving a warning to players and coaches, they must remember Malaysian football depends on the trust of fans and not financial incentives from bookies.
"I urge the Police and the MACC to get to the root of the problem," he told reporters in commenting on the arrest of 28-year-old man in Johor who was suspected to be involved in illegal-bookmaking on the Malaysia Cup match between Johor and Kedah at the Larkin Stadium on Tuesday.

He also said that the ministry would be cooperating with the FA of Malaysia to rid the sport of the scourge. – Bernama
