BADMINTON INDONESIAN OPEN GP GOLD 2011

PETALING JAYA: The scratch pair of Ow Yao Han-Tan Wee Kiong stole the limelight after playing like men possessed to stun reigning Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia in the second round of the Indonesian Open GP Gold in East Kalimantan yesterday.
Yao Han-Wee Kiong, who had to get through the qualifiers, blew away the second seeds 21-17, 21-13 in just 27 minutes.
This result, coming a day after Liew Daren had sent sixth seed Simon Santoso packing in the first round of the men’s singles , is a strong message that Malaysia can still be a force to be reckoned with in the Jakarta SEA Games.
Yao Han-Wee Kiong’s impressive win and their ability to strike up a good understanding could now leave national doubles head coach Tan Kim Her with a selection headache.
Splendid surprise: Ow Yao Han (above) and Tan Wee Kiong stunned Markis Kido- Hendra Setiawan 21-17, 21-13 in the second round yesterday.
Yao Han’s regular partner Chooi Kah Ming will be out for the next few months with an injury while Wee Kiong is due to partner Hoon Thien How. This could be Yao Han-Wee Kiong’s last tournament as a pair.
Earlier this month, Yao Han-Wee Kiong also reached the quarter-finals of the Taiwan Open, where they managed to stretch another top Indonesian pair – Alven Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan – to three games before bowing out.
“I got off the phone with Rosman (Razak) and he told me that Yao Han-Wee Kiong played exceptionally well and controlled the entire match,” said Kim Her.
“I’m also impressed with Yao Han as he is the one player in the doubles squad who has improved the most.
“This could be their last tournament together and hopefully that performance against the Olympic champions will give them the extra confidence and motivation to go far in the competition.”
Yao Han-Wee Kiong are the sole survivors in the doubles event after KLRC’s Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen failed to make the grade.

F1-SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX 2011

CHAMPIONSHIP-CHASING German Sebastian Vettel grabbed his 11th pole position of the season yesterday as his Red Bull team secured a front-row lockout for the Singapore Grand Prix.
The 24-year-old dominated the floodlit night session as Red Bull extended their supremacy with their 14th successive pole, a remarkable record that has given Vettel a good chance to retain his title in the 61-lap race on Sunday.
His Red Bull team-mate Australian Mark Webber was second fastest thanks to a last-gasp lap of a competitive and tense session that featured a red flag interruption, accidents and punctures at the Marina Bay circuit.
Vettel’s pole was the 26th of his career as he seeks to become the youngest double champion in Formula One history - a feat he can achieve if he wins in Singapore and nearest rival Fernando Alonso fails to finish on the podium.

LIKE FATHER,LIKE SON!!

CONGRATULATION TO BENJAMIN KHOR AND HIS FATHER EDWARD, TOGETHER WITH THEIR PARTNER SET NEW NATIONAL  TRAP RECORD IN DOUBLE TRAP TEAM EVENT IN TUN TAN SIEW TROPHY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011.

CONGRATULATION TO SHOOTERS!!

KUALA LUMPUR: Shooter Benjamin Khor had to put his training session on hold for the last three weeks because he was busy with his university examinations.
But the lack of training did not stop him from making heads turn in the Tun Tan Siew Trophy shooting championships. He combined forces with his father Edward and Tan Tian Xiang to set a new national record in the double trap team event at the Johor Clay Target Shooting Association (JCTSA) range in Kota Tinggi yesterday.
The trio hit a 389-total to break the national record by three targets. The previous record was set by Edward, Tian Xiang and Raymond Yap in 2008.
Benjamin, a matriculation student at Sunway College in Johor Baru, finished a creditable second in the individual event with a score of 171. The 50-year-old Edward took his second gold of the day with an impressive score of 182.
Simply too good: Benjamin Khor (left) and his dad Edward Khor (right) along with Tan Tian Xiang set a new national record in the Tun Tan Siew Trophy double trap team event in Kota Tinggi.
“I am proud of my son. Despite the studies, he was able to give his best,” said Edward.
“It was good that I stayed consistent in the individual event. I had scores of 46-46-45 in the qualifying and managed 45 in the final for a total of 182.
“This score would have enabled me to reach the final of the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games,” he added.
Edward is now hoping to compete in the Asian Championships in Doha in January.
The Asian meet is the last platform for shooters to book their tickets for next year’s London Olympic Games.
“I am really looking forward to participating in the Asian Championships. I am shooting reasonably well and I am confident that I can make the final at the Asian meet. My ultimate goal is to qualify for the Olympic Games,” added Edward, who is training on his own without being funded by the National Sports Council (NSC).

Djokovic eyes acting career as he targets more Grand Slam titles

NEW YORK: Novak Djokovic is ranked No. 1 and is 64-2 in 2011, and sees room for improvement.
He won three of the four Grand Slam titles this year - at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open – and is talking about adding to his collection.
“There is a lot more to prove, a lot more tournaments to win,” Djokovic told reporters at the Empire State Building on Tuesday, a day after he beat Rafael Nadal in the final at Flushing Meadows.
And that’s not all: Djokovic gained plenty of attention for his spot-on impersonations of other players (Nadal, Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova, among others), and now he wants to pursue acting.
“Yeah. Why not? I might do something if I have time soon. And I would like to. I just think show business is something that attracts me, that I really like watching, that I like being a part of. It’s part of my personality,” Djokovic said after making the rounds to various morning talk shows with a couple of days’ worth of stubble on his face and the benefit of about three hours’ worth of sleep.
The 24-year-old from Serbia didn’t provide details or indicate whether he’d like to wind up on TV or in a movie; he did say he already has a couple of offers to consider.
“This the way I see things off the court. ... If I embrace them, if I accept them as something that can give me energy, that can make me happy, then it all goes in a positive direction,” Djokovic said. “Or vice versa: You can say, ‘Oh, look this is taking my attention off tennis. This is negative.’ It just depends on the way you look at it, and I try always to look at it in a positive way.”
Just in case anyone might wonder how focused Djokovic is on his future as a thespian, he was sure to note: “I will not interfere that with my professional life.”
Djokovic is doing pretty well at his day job, putting together what seven-time major champion John McEnroe called “the greatest year in the history of our sport, there’s no doubt about it.”
McEnroe, by the way, went 82-3 in 1984.
As impressive as Djokovic’s overall record is, what’s even more indicative of exactly how well he’s playing is that he is 10-1 against Nadal and Roger Federer this season.
He overcame a two-set deficit, then two match points at 5-3, 40-15 in the fifth, to eliminate Federer in the US Open semi-finals on Saturday, before dominating Nadal for most of the four hours and 10 minutes it took to complete their riveting 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1 final. It’s only the second time someone beat Federer and Nadal at the same Grand Slam tournament. — AP

Bolt wins 100m redemption race

ZAGREB: World record holder Usain Bolt won the 100 metres dash at an IAAF World Challenge event on Tuesday in a personal season's best time of 9.85 seconds on a hot and humid evening in Croatia's capital.
Having been disqualified following a false start at the world championships in Daegu, South Korea, last month, Bolt was eager to redeem himself for missing out on the opportunity to retain the title he won at the 2009 event in Berlin.
But Bolt had to work hard to finish ahead of 2011 world bronze medalist Kim Collins, who kept up with the towering Jamaican until the final 10 metres and pushed him all the way to the finish line.
Bolt was immediately swarmed by fans looking for autographs and was escorted across the terraces by security officials as he received a standing ovation from 12,000 fans in the Mladost track and field sports complex located on the banks of Sava river.
"Personally, I felt I could have done a little bit better because it was a really poor start and I kind of lost concentration after the start," Bolt told a news conference.
"I was expecting a better start and I think I could have done better, especially with the weather like this because the conditions were good."
Bolt was slow out of the blocks and the grimace on his face when he crossed the finish line left no doubt he had to dig deep to finish ahead of Collins, who finished in 10.01 seconds, while Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago came third in 10.03.
World champion Carmelita Jeter of the United States won the women's 100m sprint in 11.00 seconds, ahead of Schillonie Calvert of Jamaica (11.13) and Bulgarian Ivet Lalova (11.33).
Calvert then sprung the surprise of the evening when she set a personal best of 22.55 seconds to win the women's 200m ahead of compatriot Sherone Simpson, who clocked in at 22.95.
Home favourite Blanka Vlasic had to settle for a runners-up finish in the women's high jump behind world champion Anna Chicherova of Russia, with both clearing the bar at 2.00 metres but the latter needing fewer attempts.
"Under the circumstances I am pleased with the result and it was important for me to clear two metres today, I think it will be difficult for me to improve on that this season," Vlasic said.
"I am delighted the fans were treated to a spectacular meet here because I practically grew up in this stadium."

Shooters slay ghost of Vientiene with eight-gold haul

Malaysian shooters erased the nightmare of their previous visit to Vientiane two years ago with a brilliant eight-gold medal haul at the just-concluded South-east Asian Shooting Association (SEASA) Championships.
Malaysia failed to gun down a single gold medal from the Vientiene in the Laos SEA Games two years ago.
But the performances of women shooters Nur Ayuni Farhana Abdul Halim (pic) and Joseline Cheah in their respective individual disciplines in Vientiane this time augurs well for the SEA Games in Palembang in November.
The absence of top woman rifle shooter Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi, due to ill health, was hardly felt as Nur Ayuni delivered three gold and one silver medals.
The 21-year-old lass came out tops in the 50m rifle three-position individual event with a total of 675.2 points.
She also claimed two gold medals in the 10m air rifle and 50m rifle three-position team events with Muslifah Zulkifli and Haslisa Hamed.
The Malaysian trio amassed 1,166 points in the air rifle team event and triumphed in the 50m rifle three-position with 1,713 points.
Nur Ayuni’s silver medal came from the 10m air rifle individual event.
Nur Ayuni, who partnered Nur Suryani to clinch gold in the women’s 10m air rifle pairs at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games in October last year, has yet to bag a gold at the SEA Games level.
And she aims to do just that in Palembang.
“I got silver in the team and bronze in the individual events at the last SEA Games. So I hope it will be a gold medal this time,” said Nur Ayuni, who is one of four shooters in the Road to London programme.
“The SEASA meet has given me a timely boost ahead of my second SEA Games, where I expect stiffer competition.” It was also a satisfying outing for Joseline, who bagged gold in her pet 10m air pistol discipline.
The Penang-born Joseline got her act right when it mattered most, shooting a total of 99.9 in the final round to snatch the gold medal by a slim margin.
Joseline finished with 475.9 to claim the gold, ahead of Vietnam’s Nguyen Thu Van (475.4).
Joseline went into the final tied on second place with Commonwealth Games gold medallist Bibiana Ng on 376, trailing Nguyen by just one point.
Bibiana finished third with 474.3 but did not get the bronze as the rules state that only one shooter from each country is eligible for a medal. “I won it before in 2006 and it gives me confidence to look ahead to the SEA Games, where I hope to shoot for my first gold medal,” said Joseline.
“It’s harder this time as there are no team events for shooting in this year’s SEA Games. But we will fight hard for it like everyone else.”
The remaining gold medals for Malaysia came from the team events, where the cumulative scores of the shooters from the individual rounds are taken into account.
The SEASA meet saw the participation of all 10 member associations.

Stosur tames angry Serena to win her first Grand Slam title

SAMANTHA Stosur out-played three-time champion Serena Williams 6-2, 6-3 to win the US Open on Sunday, claiming the first Grand Slam title of her career in a stormy final.
Stosur kept her composure as Williams erupted in anger at the chair umpire in the second set, dominating the 13-time Grand Slam champion who had reached the final without dropping a set.
She became the first Australian woman to take the title in New York since Margaret Court in 1973, and the first to win a Grand Slam since Evonne Goolagong won Wimbledon in 1980.
“I had one of my best days and I’m very fortunate that I had it on this stage in New York,” Stosur said. “Ever since I started playing it was a dream of mine to be here one day.”
Williams arrived in the final after dismantling world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the semi-finals on Saturday night in a match that dragged toward midnight.

“I was more tired than I expected,” Williams said. “But I want to give all credit to Sam today ... She played really, really well.
“That’s what you have to do when you play a Grand Slam final.”
Stosur, playing her second career Grand Slam final after a runner-up finish in the French Open last year, quickly claimed the opening set, breaking Williams to lead 2-1 and winning the last 12 points of the set as Williams’ frustration grew.
Williams, whose powerful serve is a cornerstone of her game, struggled to get her first serves in and Stosur repeatedly made her pay.
“She was cracking ‘em today,” Williams said of the Australian, who was still rolling in the opening game of the second frame when she gave herself a double break point with a crushing return of serve.
Williams saved one with an ace, and appeared to save another for deuce. But the American’s shout of “c’mon” as soon as she unleashed her forehand came before Stosur reached the ball, and umpire Eva Asderaki immediately penalised Williams for “intentional hindrance” and the point and the game went to Stosur.
“Aren’t you the one who screwed me over last time?,” Williams bellowed at Asderaki. “That is totally not cool.”
The scene recalled Williams’ similar meltdown in her 2009 semi-final defeat to Kim Clijsters.
In that match, she unleashed a tirade of abuse at a lineswoman who called a foot-fault during the tense match and a penalty point sealed her fate in a 6-4, 7-5 defeat.
This time an angry Williams - backed by a suddenly energised crowd on the 22,000-seat Arthur Ashe Stadium - immediately stepped up her game, breaking Stosur for 1-1 and holding to edge ahead 2-1. Stosur remained aloof from the dispute, but admitted the crowd response was intimidating.
“It was probably the loudest I ever felt a crowd in my whole entire life,” she siad. “You’re right in the middle of it.
“It was definitely a quite overwhelming feeling. But once I hit that next ball in the court and started playing again, I felt settled.”
Williams continued to berate Asderaki on the changeover, but Stosur stayed calm and saved two break points in the fourth game to level the set at 2-2.
Stosur said she didn’t really know just what was happening between Williams and the umpire.
“I was just kind of there,” Stosur said. “I do know the rule, but it’s not something I’ve ever had to deal with before.”
She gained the edge with a break for 4-3, and broke again to seal the match with yet another blistering return off a Williams second serve on her third match point. — AFP

Djokovic beats Nadal to win US Open

NEW YORK: Serbia's Novak Djokovic outplayed Spain's Rafa Nadal to win the US Open final 6-2 6-4 6-7 6-1 at Flushing Meadows on Monday and show why he really is the hottest player in the game right now.
The world number one produced a masterful display of tactics and precision then regained his composure after failing to serve out the match in the third set to seal victory after four hours and 10 minutes.
The win provided Djokovic with his first US Open title after he had twice been beaten in the final, including last year's decider against Nadal, and his third grand slam this year after having won the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
Nadal, who was the undisputed king of tennis 12 months ago when he completed his collection of grand slam titles at Flushing Meadows, was again left searching for answers after a season in which he has lost six finals, including Wimbledon, and the number one ranking to Djokovic.

No matter how hard he tried, Nadal could not find a way to get on top of the Serbian, who played at an extraordinary high-level despite windy conditions at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
To his credit, Nadal fought back gamely to win the third set in a tiebreaker after Djokovic came within two points of wrapping up the championship on his own serve.
There were signs of concern for the Serbian when he called for the trainer to treat his aching back at the start of the fourth set but he recovered and broke Nadal's opening serve to regain control.
After consolidating his lead by holding his next two service games, he broke Nadal's serve again, for the 11th time in the match, the served out victory, collapsing on the court in celebration after smashing a winner past his opponent.
Both players produced some incredible tennis, including some epic rallies that had the center court crowd roaring at the top of the lungs, but it was Djokovic who won all the key moments.
In each of the first two sets, Nadal jumped out to a 2-0 lead, only to be reined in by Djokovic, who kept the Spanish left-hander under constant pressure with some monster returns that landed right at his feet.
Djokovic reeled off six straight games to take the opening set after 53 minutes but found himself down 2-0 again at the start of the second.
He broke back after an epic third game that lasted more than 17 minutes and included eight deuces and led 4-2. Nadal got back to 4-4 but another service break cost him the set.
The third set was the longest, lasting 84 minutes. Both players were broken three times but Djokovic had the chance to serve out the match.
He failed but made amends by racing through the fourth set in 42 minutes to leave no one in doubt that he is the best player in the world.

IT'S BRONZE FOR MALAYSIA

KUALA LUMPUR: Youngster Mohamed Firhan Ashaari turned hero for Malaysia in the inaugural Asian Champions Trophy as he netted the winner against Japan in the bronze medal playoff in Ordos, China yesterday.
With just seven seconds left on the clock the 18-year-old national junior player pounced on the ball in the D and slammed home a reverse hit into the net for the 1-0 victory.
Until then both teams failed to score. It was the second meeting betwen the two teams in the tournament within three days.
Instant hero: The Malaysian players congratulate Mohamed Firhan Ashaari (third from left) for scoring against Japan in the Asian Champions Trophy bronze medal playoff Sunday. Malaysia won 1-0. – AFP
In the group phase Malaysia came back from two goals down to beat Japan 3-2 and earn a shot at the bronze medal playoff.
Again the youngsters from the Project 2013 squad stole the show against Japan. In the group match Amir Farid and Faisal Saari were the goal scorers. Yesterday, their team-mate Firhan hogged the limelight.
Yesterday both teams had ample chances to score with the Japan having three penalty corners to Malaysia’s two.
But all the attempts failed and by the 69th minute, with extra-time looming, Firhan struck the winner.
National coach Tai Beng Hai said that it was good to beat Japan again.
“It was tough and both teams were tired. This was a match where the team who took their chances well will come out on top. It could easily have been the Japanese. They did try hard as well.
“I must give credit to Firhan for his display and he did well to keep going until the end,” he said.
“There is no doubt that the young players have responded to our call to learn and gain from the outings but overall all the players played well.
“This has been a good tournament. We must learn from it to be better. Japan are also an improved side. Like us, Japan are preparing for the Olympic qualifiers next year, so it was a learning curve for them too,” said Beng Hai.
India emerged the first winners of the Asian Champions Trophy when they defeated Pakistan 4-2 on penalties.
Both teams ended regulation 0-0 and extra time also failed to break the duck. A penalty shootout ensured.
In the shootout the India scorers were Danish Mujtaba, Rajpal Singh, Yuvaraj Walmiki and Saravanjit Singh while Andul Hasserm Khan and Mohamed Ridhwan were the only players to convert their flicks for Pakistan.
Earlier in the day, South Korea defeated China 2-1 to finish fifth.
RESULTS
Final: Pakistan 0 India 0 (India won 4-2 on penalties)
Third: Malaysia 1 Japan 0
Fifth: South Korea 2 China 1

Police, MACC asked to come down hard on bookies

KEMAMAN (Sept 10, 2011): The Youth and Sports Ministry wants the Police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to come down hard football bookies.
Its minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said their match-fixing activities had tarnished the image of Malaysian football and that the "cancer should be tackled without mercy".
"This (match-fixing) is very shameful and disappointing. I am giving a warning to players and coaches, they must remember Malaysian football depends on the trust of fans and not financial incentives from bookies.
"I urge the Police and the MACC to get to the root of the problem," he told reporters in commenting on the arrest of 28-year-old man in Johor who was suspected to be involved in illegal-bookmaking on the Malaysia Cup match between Johor and Kedah at the Larkin Stadium on Tuesday.

Ahmad Shabery, who was met by reporters at a Hari Raya open house hosted by Terengganu Datuk Seri Ahmad Said here today, added that "bookies were now keen to get into the action" following Malaysia's resurgence in football regionally.
He also said that the ministry would be cooperating with the FA of Malaysia to rid the sport of the scourge. – Bernama

Plane crash claims KHL club: 'The team is gone'

A doomed Russian charter carrying the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team overshot the end of a runway before the plane took off and crashed into a radio mast Wednesday, killing nearly everyone on board.
Among the dead were several former NHL players, including the team’s Canadian head coach, Brad McCrimmon, who was also a former assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings.
Two former Maple Leafs, Igor Korolev and Alexander Karpovtsev, died in the crash, along with former NHLers Pavol Demitra, Ruslan Salei, Karlis Skrastins, Josef Vasicek and Karel Rachunek.
Korolev played with current Maple Leaf Nikolai Kulemin in the KHL in Magnitogorsk.
“Igor Korolev was my friend,” Kulemin said Wednesday at Leaf practice. “I know all the guys, all young guys, I played junior with them. I know everybody because I played in that league three years. It’s crazy.”
After the aircraft collided with an airport beacon antenna, it slammed into a riverbank, catching fire and breaking into several pieces.

Forty-three people were killed in the afternoon crash, which sent bodies and debris into the nearby Volga River.
“At first we didn’t believe it. But right now, there is no hope. The team is gone,” a Lokomotiv official said soon after the accident on a Twitter feed.
Of the 45 on board, two survived the initial crash, player Alexander Galimov and Alexander Sizov, a flight attendant. Both were in critical condition.
The plane exploded under clear skies at the Yaroslavl Airport. The city of 590,000 sits about 250 kilometres northeast of Moscow.
According to a veteran air traffic controller at the facility, the plane appeared unable to gain its required takeoff speed on the runway and travelled several metres into the grass beyond before getting airborne, Russia’s LifeNews.ru reported.
“A second later it leaned onto its left side and crashed,” Ariy Novik said.
It was about 10 metres above the ground at the point of impact, Novik told the news agency. He said everyone in the air-traffic control room saw the last seconds of the catastrophe.
The jet was part of an aging Soviet-era fleet that was to have been taken out of service next year. It was carrying the team from Yaroslavl to Minsk, the Belarus capital, for the team’s first game of the KHL season Thursday.
This is the darkest day in the history of our sport,” International Ice Hockey Federation president Rene Fasel said.
According to Vladimir Gerasimov, an expert with the country’s Professional Union of Civil Aviation Pilots, the plane likely made at least two lurching attempts to gain the sky along the airfield’s three kilometre runway, only taking off after hitting the grass at the strip’s end. The 36-metre long plane typically needs only a kilometre to get airborne.
Gerasimov, who has helped conduct more than 100 crash investigations, told the Star that pilot error was likely involved.
“It seems there was a mistake in the (pilot’s) judgment — because when you have such difficulties taking off you are not supposed to fly,” Gerasimov said.
The crash left players and fans grieving around the hockey world, which has already been left in mourning in North America after three NHL tough guys were found dead in the past few months.
The Kontinental Hockey League is an international league that includes teams from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Latvia and Slovakia. Lokomotiv was a three-time Russian league champion in 1997, 2002 and 2003. It took bronze last season in the KHL.
Korolev became an assistant coach last year with Lokomotiv after his final KHL season as a player in 2009-10.
At Korolev’s two-storey home on a leafy North York cul-de-sac, a half dozen cars and SUVs were parked out front Wednesday afternoon, and a friend of the family was on the porch, making a phone call. Another family friend who came to the door said the Korolev family “has asked for their privacy today.”
In a statement, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman called the accident a catastrophe.
“Though it occurred thousands of miles away from our home arenas, this tragedy represents a catastrophic loss to the hockey world — including the NHL family, which lost so many fathers, sons, teammates and friends who at one time excelled in our league,” Bettman said.
“Our deepest condolences go to the families and loved ones of all who perished.”
Vladislav Tretiak, the great Soviet netminder who is now president of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation, echoed Bettman’s sentiments.
“This is a huge tragedy for Russian as well as for international hockey. Several internationally well known players, a Canadian coach, all of them had remarkable careers in the big sport, have died in that crash,” Tretiak told the Star.
“We all are deeply shocked with the loss of such a great team,” he said.
Former Leaf GM John Ferguson Jr. remembered Demitra. “My father (John Sr.) was with Ottawa when they drafted Pavol Demitra,” he said. “This guy was an electrifying talent, a real stand up team guy and a good person.”
Riley Armstrong, brother of current Maple Leaf Colby Armstrong, was also listed online as a Lokomotiv team member. But Riley Armstrong tweeted early Wednesday that he was alive and not with the team anymore.
“I’m safe but thanks for the kind words but pray and think of the players and their families on that flight,” he said in a tweet to his brother.
Colby Armstrong remained affected by the news that McCrimmon, whom he got to know during his time in Atlanta, had died.
“It’s a terrible thing that happened. I know (McCrimmon) has a family and kids. It’s crazy to think that it could happen. He was in Saskatoon when I was younger and a big part of the community. He helped me out a lot when I went to Atlanta.”
The 52-year-old from Plenty, Sask., spent 18 years in the NHL, most notably with Calgary, where his team won the Stanley Cup in 1989. He was named Flames captain the next season before moving on to the Detroit Red Wings, Hartford Whalers and Phoenix Coyotes, where he finished his career in 1997.
Dave King, the longtime NHL and Canadian national team coach who spent the 2005-06 season as a head coach in Russia, said his players used to joke about the age and safety of the charter planes on which they travelled.
“There was one plane we’d get a lot and the players called it Pterodactyl Air. The planes were old. They were dated,” said King, now a developmental coach with the Coyotes.
Russia and the former Soviet republics combined for the worst air traffic safety record in the world in 2009, according to the International Air Transport Association, with an accident rate 13 times the world average. There were 24 aircraft accidents in Russia in 2010.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin immediately sent the country’s transport minister to the site, 15 kilometres east of Yaroslavl. President Dmitry Medvedev also planned to tour the crash site.
Tretiak denied the plane involved in yesterday’s crash was unsafe.
“I used such a plane all the time,” he said through a Russian translator. “The last time I used such a plane was three days ago. I just took part in a TV program where aviation experts (said) that plane had a capacity to fly for another 25 years without any problems,” he said.
The heads of the KHL called an urgent meeting to discuss the measures to be taken following the crash. The Salavat Yulaev versus Atlant match, which was to be the opening battle of the season, was cancelled.
“We will do our best to ensure that hockey in Yaroslavl does not die, and that it continues to live for the people that were on that plane,” said Tretiak.
