Malaysia win one silver, two bronze at Universiade

PETALING JAYA: It was an early end to Malaysia’s campaign on the final day of the World University Games (Universiade) in Shenzhen as taekwondo exponent Chen Hon Kit made a swift exit in the men’s below 63kg competition.
Hon Kit lost 4-6 to Swede Uno Sanli in the first round of competition.
He was the only Malaysian in action yesterday as the curtains came down after 12 days of competition.
Malaysia, who sent their largest contingent of 125 athletes this time, thus failed to achieve their target of bagging one gold but still had the divers to thank as they contributed all the three medals.
The one silver and two bronzes saw Malaysia finish 48th in the overall standings.
The silver came from Pandelela Rinong in the women’s 10m platform individual and she claimed a bronze medal as well in her partnership with Leong Mun Yee in the platform synchro.
Malaysia bagged another bronze medal in the overall women’s team event on Monday.
A total of 58 countries managed to win medals in the Universiade this time while China emerged overall champions with 75 golds, 39 silvers and 31 bronzes.
Russia finished second overall with 42-45-45 followed by South Korea (28-21-30), Japan (23-26-38) and United States (17-22-11).
Thailand emerged with the best results among the South East Asian countries with a tally of 7-2-9.
